gemMs says:Ageless in Minnesota & Looking for Work
Is anyone hiring someone over the age of reason?
On the employment airplane, I am on Standby. I used to be in the Business Class and am trying to get seating there again. I realize that there are 9.8 million people unemployed in America (another 650,000 who just gave up looking). My gut feeling is that a majority of
we job-hungry folks are over 40. I'm disappointed when, going to job fairs, I get looks from the recruiters that make me feel as if I have a wart on my nose or spinach in my teeth.
Yes, they are guardedly polite; as if they are talking to their auntie or grandma. Then they take my resume, give me a big smile and send that telepathic signal that says that I will never hear from them again.
We constantly hear enough about job loss due to: downsizing, jobs elimination, bad management, no management, company in bad shape, no shape; fighting off bankruptcy, liening, forfeiting, fiscally under advisement; moving out of town/out of state/offshore, etc. Hey! Maybe I should look for jobs oversees where the U.S. companies have moved their offices. I even listen to the grizzly TV news that states even the young are in trouble - no solace there.
So, I read AARP magazines, research the web: Linkedin, Plaxo, Facebook(?), Monster and its offspring. I'm told to network - what if your network is retired or retiring (luckily, not dead)? Are there networks for rent?
Do I have to lie? Be evasive? Color my hair? (Actually, I already do this!) Consider Botox? Tummy tucks? Buttocks enhancement? I only need to work a few more years so I can pay off my mortgage and pay for my health care (my siblings and I have already considered signing up for our own ice flow in Alaska. With that, and a bottle of our favorite alcohol, we will not need to worry about the new health care plans).
I am educated, housebroken, love to dance, can make coffee, operate a computer, deal with troubled employees & customers, and can feed myself (and others, if necessary). I am fun to be around, can take and give directions (even on the road). I love people; working with them and for them. I take good care of myself and was recently told that " I look great for my age" ... what does that really mean? All else failing, I could perhaps start my own business (again). So, come on; take a chance - I will totally overwhelm you with my talents and loyalty. Not all of my best years are behind me. And, although not cheap or free, I am very reasonably priced.
