Mary Ellen holds the middle position of the five sisters Mary Ellen is the fifth child (and third daughter) in her family. Since each of the other six children had someone to pair off with (based on their age and/or sex), she's always felt slighted that she was the odd one out. This is probably the reason why she's been married almost all of her adult life! Her husband, Tom and daughter, Sheilagh, are the lights of her life. Mary Ellen had aspirations of teaching art after graduation from college but in 1973, corporate America was casting its net for newly-minted female college grads, so she started her career in "Personnel," telling her fellow art graduates that she was molding people instead of clay.

She's been working in what is now Human Resources ever since (that's 27 years!) and is a certified SPHR (senior professional in human resources). Along the way, she completed an MBA in general management. She led the Human Resource function for five organizations, was the Managing Principal for the Minnesota offices of an international human resource consulting firm. In 1998, Mary Ellen started her own consulting business, The MEL Group LLC.

Mary Ellen is past-president of two professional Human Resource associations, one nonprofit board of directors and a former member of the board of directors of a mid-sized life insurance company. She is currently a director on the board of two nonprofit organizations. She also sings alto (and second alto, when absolutely necessary) for a women's civic organization chorus. Whew!
